Distortion Accidentally Made Music What It Is Today

Updated: Oct 1, 2018

Once upon a time in the future, an unexpected solar flare surges planet Earth's magnetic field. An android bot performing orbital satellite repairs subsequently experiences a sudden loss of battery power. The android's rotors momentarily fall out of balance as the bot performs maintenance on a faulty transponder. The jolt in motion causes the bot's industrial soldering iron to puncture the android's own internal circuitry. Distortion fires through the bot's pre-programmed synapses.

This was the first time an android could feel.

Ever since that moment, a founding principal of Strike Modern has been that making something worse often makes it better. From art and design to music and production. Polyphonic offers an essay on the history of distortion in music as proof.
